We are Not Ordinary!

 We went to see the movie Superman with Breakfast with the King, our children’s ministry.  As many of us know, the character is not from here, and Superman’s abilities are not ordinary.  News Flash! Neither are our abilities. We are citizens of the Kingdom of God, and as born-again believers, our citizenship is in heaven. Philippians 3:17-20.  There is no greater kingdom than the Kingdom of Almighty God.  Hear someone say, ‘Sister Theresa, what about my citizenship here?  Well, until Jesus returns, we have dual citizenship; we are on earth now and experience the citizenship of our respective countries.  You can’t see either citizenship; you experience it and operate within its parameters, enjoying its benefits.

Benefits of the Kingdom of God

Citizenship is your legal status in a country, and the benefits and restrictions vary depending on the country. However, the Kingdom of God is available to all who call on the name of Jesus to be saved (Romans 10:9-10).  And this makes us no ordinary people; we have 24/7 access to our King (the presence of God), as Hebrews 4:16 states. Legions of angels at our disposal, Hebrews 1:14, we can sow and reap a compounded harvest if we follow the Kingdom’s principles. Check out Malichi 3:10 “Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.” To top it off, when we leave our earthly home, we get to live in eternity with our King forever.  This is not an ordinary kingdom.

The Ordinary just won’t do

Ordinary means with no special or distinctive features, just normal.  That’s not who we are or what God has called us to be at all.   Read the book of Philippians this week; it’s often referred to as the book of joy, but it also tells us that, along with joy, suffering and difficulty in life go hand in hand.  The bible is full of examples, look at David before he becomes king, on the run from Saul, and the city of Ziklag, where he lives, is invaded, burned, and his family and his men’s families are taken away.  This created grief, sorrow, and anger; his men threatened to kill him.   David was not Superman, nor did he have his superpowers, but what he did have was fellowship with our incredible Lord God.  1 Samuel 30:7-8 “…But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.Then David said to Abiathar the priest, Ahimelech’s son, “Please bring the ephod here to me.” And Abiathar brought the ephod to David. So David inquired of the Lord, saying, “Shall I pursue this troop? Shall I overtake them?”   The answer God gave David, “Pursue, for you shall surely overtake them and without fail recover all.

So for any situation you find yourself in, inquire of the Lord, no matter what the problem is, great or small. Years ago, I was not working and was believing God for everything for a few years. Was it easy? No, but it fortified my relationship with God and introduced me to a more profound commitment to prayer and intercession.  Adverse situations will come, but know that the greater one resides in us. 

Yes, it can seem like we are dealing with two realities: what you are experiencing and what the Word of God says. For example, someone who is sick could have a backache or cancer, but you continue to confess the healing scriptures, and be sure that one of the realities is going to overcome the other.  Dodie Osteen of Lakewood church miraculously overcame terminal cancer in 1981 by confessing the healing scriptures and went home to be with the Lord this past week, 2025. Or my young niece years ago who got into a can of lye and ate some thinking it was rock candy, and while her mother was getting dressed to take her to the hospital, the Lord Jesus said, “Take her in the backroom, lay your hand over her mouth” and in minutes her mouth was back to normal.  The reality of Isaiah 53:5, “By His stripes we are healed,” overcame the situations.  Or when you need to pay a bill or a job need arises, and the hand of God shows up with favor and/or money.  Psalms 84:11 “For the LORD God is a sun and shield; The LORD bestows grace and favor and honor; No good thing will He withhold from those who walk uprightly.”  These are not ordinary occurrences, but the Miricale Woking power of God is in operation.

Wake Up from Your Sleep

So let’s wake up from our sleep and realize we are not ordinary.  You’re a child of the Most High God, King Jesus is your elder brother, and He raised us up together and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Him. Ephesians 2:6. He became as we were, so that we might become as He is. And even Superman can’t top that.

Ephesians 5:1-2 in the Message bible will wrap this message up for us. “Watch what God does, and then you do it, like children who learn proper behavior from their parents. Mostly what God does is love you. Keep company with him and learn a life of love. Observe how Christ loved us. His love was not cautious but extravagant. He didn’t love in order to get something from us but to give everything of himself to us. Love like that.”

Finally, if you are not saved, stop right now and ask the Lord to forgive you of your sins and to come into your heart.  Roman 10:9-10 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”
