Spiritual Armor – We Come to Win PERIOD!

Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. I Samuel 17:46-47

Last week, we started talking about our Spiritual Armor. The armor example in Ephesians 6: 14-18 described by the Apostle Paul is what was used in his day with a description of each weapon that gives us instruction/understanding for today and the times that will follow. This passage included offensive and defensive weapons. Today, I want to go back to the Old Testament and look at David and his battle with Goliath in 1Sanuel 17 (Please Read it). David was a teenager then but had faced challenges in his responsibility as keeper of his father’s sheep and the story finds him on the battlefield with his nation Israel.

Is there a Cause?

We are not bullies looking for a fight, but we can certainly finish one off in the name of Jesus. Back to David earlier in the same chapter, we see the cause and understand how high the stakes were. Goliath told Israel in verses eight and nine of the same chapter. “And he stood and cried unto the armies of Israel, and said unto them, Why are ye come out to set your battle in array? am not I a Philistine, and ye servants to Saul? choose you a man for you, and let him come down to me. If he be able to fight with me, and to kill me, then will we be your servants: but if I prevail against him, and kill him, then shall ye be our servants, and serve us.” Israel was facing slavery as a nation if defeated, they had to win, PERIOD!

Weapons and Strategies

There are different types of weapons and strategies. David used a slingshot, which he was accustomed to using. King Saul had given him his armor to use, which was more elaborate, but listen to what David told the king, “… and David said unto Saul, I cannot go with these; for I have not proved them. And David put them off him.” Taking this position may have seemed like a wrong choice for those looking on, but remember,” For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 David had coupled his weapon of choice with his testimony of past victories of killing a lion and a bear and the reward he would receive for slewing Goliath.

What is your confession?

Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. This day will the Lord deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. And all this assembly shall know that the Lord saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hands. 1Samuel 17:45-47

The only offensive weapon in the armor of God described in Ephesians Chapter Six is the sword of the spirit, the Word of God. The Word of God contains God’s Power and Authority. Clarance Haynes Jr., in an article on the subject, says this. “The written Word of God carries God’s power and authority. When we speak that word, that power is brought into the conflict, carrying the same power and authority.” So, our skillfulness in the Word of God is a must. We can find solutions for any situation or battle. It is all there; David pulled that confession out of his spirit and walked it out in God’s Power.

It is worth fighting for!

Are you facing a battle with high stakes, and the end result is worth fighting for? I have been there; it was the choice of paying the mortgage or the light/gas bill. God told me, “If you pay the light/gas bill, the lights will go off anyway because they will take your house.” So, for months, I went without lights or gas. But I won that battle because the mortgage did not just get paid up; it got paid off. Thank you, Jesus. Your situation may be health-related, family, work, finances… Or your responsibility for a nation like King Saul or even the training for reigning like David, the person who was anointed and the upcoming king. All situations require us to stand and put on the whole armor of God; The belt of Truth, Breastplate of Righteousness, shoes of Peace, Shield of Faith, Helmet of Salvation and the Sword of the Spirit, we have got to use each piece with precision and skill daily, with the help of God almighty in the name of Jesus, to win each battle.

David defeats Goliath, the best weapon the Philistines had, with a slingshot and five smooth stones, of which four he did not use. The word says in Daniel 11:32, …but the people that do know their God shall be strong and do exploits. Get the end in mind up front in every battle you face. And remember this always, “We Come to Win PERIOD! “💕
